History

In Stephenie Meyer’s first of four novels in the “Twilight” series we meet Isabella “Bella” Swan as she is moving from sunny Phoenix Arizona, where she lived with her mother and stepfather, to rainy, misty, and dreary Forks, Washington where her father lives. Soon after reaching Forks and starting at the local high school Bella meets the handsome and intriguing Edward Cullen. While at first it seems Edward despises Bella, unable to even be in the same room as her, they somehow become friends and eventually Bella falls head-over-heels in love with the mysterious Edward Cullen. As the book progresses we eventually find out what exactly makes Edward so much different than everyone else; Him and his entire family are vampires, having been alive for hundreds of years. It does not take the sharp Bella long to figure this out and she is oddly unaffected by it as her feelings for Edward remain the same. Throughout “Twilight”, “New Moon”, “Eclipse”, and “Breaking Dawn” we follow the adventures of Bella and Edward as they go from the mortal world to the world of vampires and werewolves, we watch as their love for each other unfolds and deepens, and the line between reality and fiction becomes oddly blurry.

The “Twilight” epidemic hit the United States in 2005 when author Stephenie Meyer released her first book of four in the vampire-romance novel series. Since then over 17 million copies have been sold worldwide and they have been translated into 37 different languages. Three of the four novels have been made into major motion-pictures, with the fourth book in the process of being made into two separate movies as well. The popularity has expanded further into spoofs made by amateurs and professionals alike based on the novels and books and the market for Twilight in terms of paraphernalia as exploded with the sales of t-shirts, posters, pins, and souvenirs alike.
